1. Gastroenterology was the fourth highest compensating specialty surveyed by Medscape, reporting average compensation at $342,000 in 2012.

2. 25 percent of gastroenterologists reported compensation between $250,000 and $349,000 last year, while 47 percent reported compensation at or exceeding $350,000.

3. 19 percent of gastroenterologists reported compensation of $500,000 or more in 2012.

4. 12 percent of gastroenterologists said their compensation decreased by more than 10 percent in 2012 when compared with 2011.

5. 47 percent of gastroenterologists said their compensation remained the same as in 2011.

6. 16 percent of gastroenterologists reported compensation increases by up to 10 percent in 2012 over 2011.

7. Male gastroenterologists earned around 30 percent more than female gastroenterologists, with males reporting $349,000 on average compared with females, who reported $308,000 on average.

8. The highest compensating region of the country was the Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming), with average compensation at $498,000.

9. The lowest compensating region, the Mid Atlantic (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, Maryland Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina), was $187,000 less than the highest compensating region, at $311,000 on average.

10. Gastroenterologists in the hospital setting reported average compensation at $264,000, while employees reported compensation at $290,000.

11. Healthcare organizations were the highest compensating practice setting, at $434,000.

12. Gastroenterologists who were solo practitioners reported $347,000 on average, and those who were in a partnership reported $407,000.
