7 financial losses cardiologists saw in 2020: Medscape

Practices issues, bad investments and real estate were among the top sources of financial loss for cardiologists in 2020, according to Medscape's "Cardiologist Wealth & Debt Report 2021."

The report provides insight into the financial landscape of cardiologists during 2020, including net worth, salary and debt.

The data, published Aug. 13, was collected from Oct. 6, 2020 to Feb. 11from 17,903 respondents.

Here are seven sources of financial losses for cardiologists in 2020:

  • No significant financial losses in the past year: 68 percent
  • Practices issues (business problems, reimbursement changes, changes in practice situation): 15 percent
  • Bad investments or investments in the stock market: 12 percent
  • Real estate losses: 5 percent
  • Legal fees or lawsuit: 3 percent
  • Job loss (personal or spouse/partner): 3 percent
  • Divorce: 3 percent
  • Other: 2 percent
