The new format, which went online March 10 on Medicare's website, includes larger type and clearer explanations of medical services. The overhaul also seeks to shorten paper copies of medical bills, which can often span a dozen pages for those with multiple doctor visits and treatments. The revised paper version will be phased in early next year.
It will also be easier for seniors to file an appeal if a claim is denied. The new form explains what to do for those who disagree with a payment decision, including an appeal form that can be filled in and mailed. Patients can also check the status of claims online and use an online appeals form rather than wait to receive a statement in the mail.
