Two Key Issues for Anesthesia Outsourcing

More and more, hospitals are looking for professionals who can advance patient care through leadership, innovation and teamwork. When a hospital outsources services, it wants team players that are aligned with the hospital’s goals. Organizations like TeamHealth, which provides clinical outsourcing in multiple departments, are valuable for hospitals looking to meet high standards in surgical care.

According to Maureen Faul, RN, COO of TeamHealth Anesthesia, anesthesia is a hot area for clinical outsourcing. Hospitals are looking to meet two needs when outsourcing their anesthesia service. Whether a hospital needs to augment an existing anesthesia group or form a new one, they will be looking to achieve high standards and bring on physicians that can lead at the hospital, says Ms. Faul.

Improved surgical care standards
In response to the current healthcare climate and economic pressures, hospitals have less tolerance for performance measures that are under 100 percent in surgical care improvement. "There is not a lot of flexibility in the metrics," says Ms. Faul. Hospitals have always wanted to reach high performance levels, but there has been more economic pressure recently. For example, if hospitals do not meet certain surgical care levels, they can face penalties from CMS. Additionally, high standards are important for a hospital's overall performance. By improving basic operational metrics, such as length of stay for example, hospitals are able to stabilize, treat and discharge patients and thus meet their higher level mission of quality patient care.   Anesthesiologists who can contribute to a hospital's desired standards are valuable assets.

Clinical leaders
Hospitals are not only looking for anesthesiologists to contribute to greater patient care outcomes but also for the anesthesiologists to fulfill leadership roles in perioperative services. Hospitals want the physicians to fill gaps in the medical system — they want anesthesia teams to include broad-based clinical leaders. "There are demands for talent, skill in running meetings, ability to tie interdisciplinary teams together and for personable temperaments," says Ms. Faul. Not all physicians inherently have these skills, which is why organizations such as TeamHealth are training physicians to add leadership and management skills to their repertoires. "If a physician cannot sit through discussions and meetings on process improvement, they probably are not going to be a good match for the hospital," says Ms. Faul. "In order to be successful in a hospital-based environment, physicians today need to augment their clinical skills with leadership and business acumen."
