Nurses and physician assistants were ranked among the top 10 careers in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Jobs of 2012" rankings. The nursing profession was ranked No. 1, while physician assistants were ranked No. 4.
The list, based on employment projections from the Department of Labor, estimates that 720,000 nursing positions will need to be filled by 2020 and deems physician assistants "one of the fastest growing" career paths.
The healthcare industry accounted for half of the magazine's top 10 fastest growing careers. Other healthcare professions topping the rankings include occupational therapists (No. 10), physical therapists (No. 8) and pharmacists (No. 3).
In line with these projections, a recent NPR report highlighted the fact that one in eight Americans now work in healthcare.
