Editorial: Why You Shouldn't Copy and Paste in EHRs

Copying and pasting text in electronic health records can lead to HIPAA violations, lawsuits and audits, according to an editorial in KevinMD.  

The copy-paste and copy-forward functions are a shortcut for physicians but can unintentionally violate patient confidentiality, said Elizabeth Hipp, social media director for Transcription Outsourcing. It also may lead to incorrect or erroneous information in the EHR. Physicians should avoid these shortcuts to protect the safety and accuracy of patient data, she said.
