3 Tips for Handling Patient Refunds

A Physicians Practice article discusses why practices should implement a policy requiring that all dates of service be paid by the insurance company prior to issuing any patient refunds for overpayments.

  • The patient's insurance may have termed. If this happens, you can apply the patient's overpayment to any outstanding charges.
  • The insurance company denies the claim. If this happens, the practice can apply the overpayment to that date of service.
  • The insurance company reverses a charge. If the payor reverses a charge that results in the patient's deductible or out-of-pocket expenses not being met, the overpayment can now be applied to the date of service.
