Surgery Center Best Practice: Job Shadowing for Prospective Employees

Nicola Hawkinson, MA, NP, CEO and founder of SpineSearch, recently presented on "Retention Management in the Era of Health Reform" at the 9th Annual Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference in Chicago.

During her presentation she suggested ambulatory surgery centers have prospective employees come in to the ASC and have them spend a day or half-day "in the life" of the ASC before making a job offer.

"Have this person spend a few hours at the ASC, especially if this person hasn't worked in the arena before," she says. "Maybe they've been in the hospital or are new graduates. Show them what they're going to be doing day in and out; have them job shadow. There's no harm done."

Some surgery centers will pay these prospective employees for their time, but some do not, she says.
