Ohio eye practice hit with ransomware, decides not to pay: 3 details

A Beaver Township, Ohio-based eye practice reported a ransomware attack that initially occurred two weeks ago and still affects its computer system, according to the Business Journal Daily.

Three things to know:

1. Eye Care Associates, an ophthalmology and optometry practice, reported the initial attack locked its computer systems at 4 a.m. on July 28, according to an incident report the practice filed with the Beaver Township Police Department.

2. The attack locked Eye Care Associates' computer system until the group paid the ransom. The attackers did not steal patient data or other sensitive information, according to the report.

3. Since the attack, the practice has not booked any new patient appointment. The physicians have seen some existing patients, and the group is working with its third-party IT business to access back-up files.
