How healthcare leaders can improve value for patients — 5 things to know

According to Harvard Business Review, more and more healthcare organizations are beginning to track their performance on outcomes, but they're having a hard time getting started.

Here are five leadership imperatives to know:

1. Focus on finding clinician champions who want to know their outcomes and want to be transparent with their colleagues. Clinician champions are critical in generating momentum for the program and to help resolve early challenges.

2. Organize a sustainable outcomes measurement system that engages a broad range of functions within the organization. Appoint a project leader to direct the team, define headlines for key milestones, such as contracting with an external IT vendor or obtaining ethics approval, and hold the team accountable for delivering on them.

3. Invest time and resources by engaging senior leaders to build bridges across function and commit to resources that will drive long-term benefit.

4. Because successful outcomes measurement programs take time, be sure to celebrate progress along the way to maintain engagement and momentum for the program.

5. Clinicians respond to inspiration from their peers, so identify and share early success stories to catalyze interest across the organization.
