E-prescribing gaining traction in healthcare: 7 takeaways

Electronic prescriptions are trending upwards, according to Medscape.

Here are seven takeaways:

1. In 2015, 77 percent of all drug prescriptions were written in a digital format, according to the 2015 National Progress Report of Surescripts.

2. Digital prescriptions only accounted for 67 percent of all prescriptions in 2014 and 58 percent in 2013.

3. About 58 percent of prescribers wrote electronic prescriptions in 2015.

4. Increasing use of e-prescribing technology and rising popularity of electronic prescribing of controlled substances is contributing to this trend.

5. In 2015, the number of providers able to use EPCS rose by 359 percent. This spurred a 600 percent increase in controlled substance e-prescriptions.

6. In 2015, Surescripts processed four times the number of medication histories than they did in 2010.

7. Surescripts processed 1.4 billion electronic prescriptions, 1.05 billion medication histories and 15.3 million clinical messages in 2015.
