Matt Oliva, MD, of Medford, Ore.-based Medical Eye Center, is offering affordable cataract surgery to people in rural Ethiopia, according to The Columbian.
Here are five notes:
1. Because of lack of access to medical services, many patients in underdeveloped countries suffer from debilitating cataract blindness.
2. Dr. Oliva spent time in Nepal as a medical student, where he saw surgeons restore the vision of patients, some of whom were blind for 15 years.
3. Dr. Oliva and his team restored the eyesight of 750 Ethiopians over a span of five days.
4. He serves on the Himalayan Cataract Project's board of directors. The project serves patients in Nepal, India, Ghana, Myanmar, Bhutan and Rwanda.
