Medical Board of California creates new adverse event reporting requirements for outpatient surgery settings
The Medical Board of California implemented a new set of adverse event reporting procedures, effective Jan. 1, for accredited outpatient surgery facilities.

Wichita Nephrology Group begins construction on $2.5M vascular clinic, ASC
Wichita (Kan.) Nephrology Group is opening a new clinic and surgery center in the Eastern part of the city due to increased patient volume. The new 6,500-square-foot facility, called ReVask Center, is expected to be complete this summer and include eight exam rooms.

Ohio pediatric gastroenterologist guilty of sexual offenses
Former Dayton (Ohio) Children's Hospital pediatric gastroenterologist Arun Aggarwal, MD, pleaded guilty to four counts of gross sexual imposition in an Ohio county court Dec. 21. Dr. Aggarwal initially pled not guilty to sexually assaulting two teenage pediatric patients, but changed his plea to guilty to enter into a plea agreement. He'll serve 10 months in prison, and then return to India.

Geisinger Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Scranton opens after physicians relocate
Justin Tunis, MD, and Shazad Shaikh, MD, moved their practice from Scranton, Pa.-based Geisinger Community Medical Center to a new location in Scranton. The duo named the relocated practice Geisinger Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Scranton.

Severe weather closes 3 surgery centers, 105 other organizations for 1 day in Georgia
As snow blankets the Southern U.S., three surgery centers in Savannah, Ga., and surrounding suburban areas announced they'd close for the day Jan. 3.

ASA petitions CMS to allow anesthesiologists to participate in value-based care initiatives
The American Society of Anesthesiologists submitted a formal comment to CMS in response to the 2018 Quality Payment Program Final Rule on the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act. ASA feels anesthesiologists do not have "ample opportunities" to participate in or succeed in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System or Advanced Alternative Payment Model pathways as the rule currently stands.
