Surgical Care Affiliates and Newport Beach, Calif.-based DISC Sports & Spine have formed a joint venture. The goals of the joint venture are to "elevate the quality of outpatient surgery, increase accountability and reduce costs to consumers," according to a news release.
Brookside Surgery Center first ASC in Michigan to perform total knee replacement.
Brookside Surgery Center, located in Battle Creek, Mich., is the first ambulatory surgery center in Michigan to perform total knee replacement surgery. Joseph Burkhardt, DO, orthopedic surgeon and physician partner, performed the first total knee replacement procedure at Brookside Surgery Center in September 2014. Brookside Surgery Center is a Meridian Surgical Partners facility and a Bronson Battle Creek partner.
Surgeons refusing to operate on patients who won't quit bad habits first.
Comorbidities can make operations difficult, so some surgeons have decided they won't operate until patients do what they can to present to the operating room in optimal health. In particular, surgeons performing hernia procedures across the country have chosen to turn patients away if they do not strictly adhere to a postoperative regimen including weight loss, smoking cessation and/or nutritional supplementation, with priority given to smoking and weight matters.

HHS' Office of the Inspector General has issued a proposed rule that would amend the safe harbors to the Anti-Kickback Statute and protect certain payment practices and business arrangements from prosecution and civil sanctions under the civil monetary penalty rules. The Joint Commission has released a checklist for determining the effectiveness of equipment maintenance. The 11-question checklist covers several topics including inventory practices, maintenance schedules, documentation and personnel.

Having women involved in executive leadership is associated with higher returns, according to the Credit Suisse report: "The CS Gender 3000: Women in Senior Management." Companies with at least one woman on the board of directors outperformed companies who did not by 5 percent in the short term and 3.7 percent in the long term.
