Record numbers enroll into ACA during 1st days of open enrollment
An anonymous source said more than 200,000 people selected a plan through the ACA on the first day of open enrollment, Nov. 1. A White House administration official confirmed a "surge" of people signed up for insurance through the ACA, despite cutbacks in outreach and advertising.

Modernizing Medicine upgrades Ophthalmology EHR system
Modernizing Medicine will display its upgraded Ophthalmology EHR system at AAO 2017 in New Orleans, Nov. 11 to Nov. 14. The upgraded system features the new Image Management solution as well as a Merit-based Incentive Payments System feature.

Iowa medical center readies to open new surgery center
Shenandoah (Iowa) Medical Center is putting the finishing touches on its new outpatient surgery center. The surgery center is part of a $22 million expansion project that began in June 2015. Hospital officials estimate the surgery center will be complete in early December.

Appleton, Wis.-based Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley became the first surgery center in Northern Wisconsin to perform a total knee replacement with Stryker's Mako robotic-arm assisted total knee application.

Tenet names Richard Fisher, Richard Mark to board of directors
Tenet Healthcare named Richard Fisher and Richard Mark to the company's board, effective immediately. Both Mr. Fisher and Mr. Mark will be independent directors on the board.

AnMed Health closes Physicians Surgery Center amid layoffs
AnMed Health closed its Physicians Surgery Center permanently after it laid off 94 employees. Both organizations are based in Anderson, S.C. The health system cited several large investments to stay current with billing practices as the reason behind the layoffs.

Dr. Brian McGrath performs 1st outpatient hip replacement at Southtowns Surgery Center
Buffalo, N.Y.-based UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine orthopedic surgeon Brian McGrath, MD, performed the first hip replacement at Orchard Park, N.Y.-based Southtowns Surgery Center.
