Electronic equipment stolen from the Salt Lake City-based John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah contained the information of 602 infants and five adults, the Daily Utah Chronicle reports.
Here are five things to know:
1. A laptop computer and external storage device stolen from locked storage stored retinal images, full or partial names, birthdays and medical reference numbers for 607 patients. Neither device stored Social Security numbers or financial information.
2. Moran Eye Center learned of the theft April 3.
3. The affected patients had images taken during evaluations at the Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Hospital and Primary Children's Hospital between July 1, 2014 and March 30, 2018.
4. Moran Eye Center notified affected patients and parents or guardians by mail. It is also offering patients free credit monitoring services.
5. Police are continuing to investigate the theft.
"I sincerely regret that personal information about any of our patients is ever exposed and especially so for children. While no financial information was disclosed, I understand the concerns that impacted patients and parents may have," John A. Moran Eye Center CEO Randall J. Olson, MD, said in a statement emailed to Becker's ASC Review. "Our team is conducting a comprehensive review of our policies, procedures and security measures to ensure patient information is always protected."
