Here are six surgery centers and practices that have reported hacking incidents this year:
Palisades Eye Surgery Center in Bethesda, Md., was hit by a data breach, according to the HHS Office for Civil Rights. The email hack at Rockville Eye Surgery Center, which is doing business as Palisades Eye Surgery Center, affected 2,696 individuals.
Battle Creek, Mich.-based Brookside ENT and Hearing Center closed in March after it fell victim to a data hack that wiped out all the practice's files. The practice fell victim to ransomware. Hackers demanded $6,500 for the files.
Columbia Surgical Specialists of Spokane (Wash.) reported a ransomware attack affecting 400,000 patients to the HHS Office for Civil Rights on Feb. 18. The practice said it paid the attackers $14,649.09 to unlock encrypted files. It was one of the biggest data breaches reported so far this year.
Evansville, Ind.-based Talley Medical Surgical Eye Care Associates, which operates the Talley Eye Institute and Valley Surgery Center, experienced a data breach affecting 106,000 patients — the second-largest breach reported in May.
Pensacola, Fla.-based Clearway Pain Solutions Institute, which operates clinics and an ASC, was affected in April by an EMR data breach that exposed 35,000 records.
Quantum Vision Centers and Eye Surgery Center, based in Swansea, Ill., was hit with a malware attack April 18. The malware encrypted some files, including those on a server containing patient health information, the company said.
