10 Physicians in ASC Specialties on the Move

Keeping up with physician moves in your area is essential to bolstering provider recruitment for a surgery center. Here are 10 physicians in surgery center specialties who have transitioned to new positions or practices in the last several months.

1. Anesthesiologist Michael Appel, MD — Northeast Georgia Health System. Northeast Georgia Health System hired anesthesiologist and commercial airline pilot Michael Appel, MD, as chief patient safety officer in late November. Dr. Appel completed his medical degree at Columbia University in New York while also becoming a private pilot. He eventually merged the two careers as a traveling anesthesiologist who flew himself to each facility. In Dec. 2000, he accepted a position with Delta Connection and became an airline pilot. Dr. Appel first joined Northeast Georgia Health System in 2008 and took an immediate interest in patient safety initiatives with the system.

2. Gastroenterologist Girish Anand, MD — Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates. Girish Anand, MD, joined Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates in Roswell, Ga., in early October. Dr. Anand received his bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degree at Dr. M.G.R. University, Christian Medical College, in Vellore, India. After some time working and completing an internship in Vellore, Dr. Anand underwent further training in the United States, including an internship in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

3. Orthopedic surgeon Edward Chuong, DO — New York's North County Orthopaedic Group.
Edward Chuong, DO, joined North County Orthopaedic Group in November. Dr. Chuong completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.

4. Ophthalmologist Rodney P. Coe, MD — Retina Group of New York. Rodney P. Coe, MD, MS, a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialist, joined the Retina Group of New York in November. Dr. Coe attended Boston College, completed a master's degree at New York University in Computers in Biological Research, earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine and continued with his ophthalmic residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Dr. Coe completed his training in vitreoretinal disease and surgery at the UPMC Eye Center in Pittsburgh. He has presented research in retina, glaucoma and cornea on a national level.

5. Anesthesiologist Craig Smith, MD — North Dakota's MedCenter One. Craig Smith, MD, a board-certified anesthesiologist, recently joined MedCenter One in Bismarck, N.D. Dr. Smith completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Prior to that, he completed a family medicine residency at Martin Army Community Hospital in Fort Benning, Ga. Dr. Smith served as a family medicine physician before becoming an anesthesiologist.

6. Gastroenterologist Yasmin Karim, MD — Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates.
Yasmin Karim, MD, joined Gastroenterology Associates in Roswell, Ga., in October. Dr. Karim underwent and completed her medical training at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where she also finished her internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology.

7. Orthopedic surgeon Jeffrey I. Peretz, MD — Georgia's Resurgens Orthopaedics. Jeffrey L. Peretz, MD, joined Atlanta-based Resurgens Orthopaedics in November. He has a professional interest in joint replacement and arthroscopy, and completed his fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.

8. Gastroenterologist Lawrence R. Schiller, MD — American College of Gastroenterology.
Lawrence R. Schiller, MD, FACG, was elected as the 2011-2012 President of the American College of Gastroenterology. Dr. Schiller currently serves as the program director for the GI Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and practices at Digestive Health Associates of Texas, P.A.

9. Anesthesiologist Roy Winston, MD — California's Kaweah Delta Health Care District.
Kaweah Delta Health Care District in Visalia, Calif., named Roy Winston, MD, chief of anesthesiology for its anesthesia department in November. Dr. Winston is currently associate director of anesthesiology at a New York City hospital that has contracted with Somnia Anesthesia, the company that will take over anesthesia services at Kaweah Delta this month. Dr. Winston started working with Somnia a year ago, as it started partnerships with anesthesia departments at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx and Memorial Healthcare Hospital in Owosso, Mich.

10. Shoulder surgeon Joseph Abboud, MD — Philadelphia's Rothman Institute. Joseph Abboud, MD, joined Philadelphia-based Rothman Institute this fall. Dr. Abboud completed his fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
