Surgical Care Affiliates Sells Rhode Island Surgery Center to Hospital, Continues as Manager

Surgical Care Affiliates has sold Wayland Square Surgicare in Providence, R.I., to Rhode Island Hospital and will continue management of the ambulatory surgery center, according to sources from both organizations.

Rhode Island Hospital received approval for a change in effective control from the Rhode Island Department of Health and took ownership of the facility from SCA in 2010.

The ASC underwent renovations and recently reopened under the name Rhode Island Hospital Surgery Center at Wayland Square, with SCA in the management role. While the number of operating rooms (three) and dedicated endoscopy suites (one) did not change, one of the ORs was converted to a hybrid room for both endoscopy procedures and outpatient surgical procedures.

"The opening of the Surgery Center at Wayland Square is allowing Rhode Island Hospital to further its mission of providing the highest quality ambulatory and outpatient care in a convenient location for our patients," says Ron DiOrio, director of nursing financial systems at Rhode Island Hospital. "We have contracted the management and employment services of the previous owner, Surgical Care Affiliates, to run the facility on a day-to-day basis because of their expertise, reputation and commitment to providing high-quality patient care in an ambulatory setting."

"We are very pleased to partner with Rhode Island Hospital," says Andrew Hayek, president & CEO of SCA. "SCA will continue to manage the center and will continue to provide the outstanding patient care and clinical quality that we have always provided. SCA now manages the surgery departments of three hospitals, bringing the benefits of our clinical and management systems to leading hospitals."

The ASC will provide adult and pediatric endoscopy procedures, including upper endoscopy, colon cancer screening and colonoscopy, and outpatient surgery services for ophthalmology, plastic surgery, podiatry, gynecology and orthopedics, according to a news release from Rhode Island Hospital.

Future plans for the ASC include adding ProVation, an online documentation system for endoscopy; adding Omnicell for medication administration and management to provide a higher level of control and safety; and adding new laser liposuction technology which will allow physicians to perform a less-invasive procedure, according to the hospital sources.
