St. Louis' Shriners Hospital for Children to Build Orthopedic Surgery Center Instead of Acute-Care Hospital

Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis said it will build an outpatient orthopedic surgery center instead of the seven-story, 40-bed acute care hospital originally planned for Central West End, according to a St. Louis Today report.

Tammy Robbins, spokeswoman for the hospital, said the hospital revised its plan after recognizing that the need for inpatient care has decreased. The national Shriners organization has given the hospital approval to seek an architect for the new facility.

The building could be designed to include two surgical suites, according to the report. Shriners hopes to open the facility in 2015; until then, the existing Shriners hospital in Frontenac will remain open.
