St. Joseph's/Candler Health System and Beaufort Memorial Hospital have renewed their fight against Hilton Head Hospital's proposed ambulatory surgery center in Bluffton, S.C., according to a Southern Political Report article.
The hospital and health system have taken their objectives to the South Carolina Administrative Law Court, according to documents filed with the court this week.
On May 8, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control board voted unanimously to uphold the agency staff's decision to award a certificate of need to Hilton Head Hospital for the outpatient facility. This decision was a reversal of a denial issued in February.
St. Joseph's/Candler and BMH have argued since last fall that Hilton Head's new facility would divert their patients if allowed to open. In the latest challenge, St. Joseph's/Candler alleged that department staff bungled procedural steps and due process requirements in the regulatory journey that led to the certificate of need approval. The health system also alleged that the project is not financially feasible and will materially harm existing care providers.
