Saint Francis Hospital plans to open $26M orthopedic ASC pending regulatory approval: 5 takeaways

Hartford, Conn.-based Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center plans to open an orthopedic surgery center in Hartford, according to Hartford Courant.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The hospital plans to open the $26 million ASC as orthopedic surgery advancements allow patients to go home the same day of the procedure.

2. Equipped with six operating rooms, the ASC would be 33,000 square feet.

3. Saint Francis Hospital is awaiting approval from Connecticut's Health Care Access Office.

4. Pending regulatory approval, the hospital's center could open its doors in July 2019.

5. Hartford Hospital, one of Saint Francis's competitors in the region, opened the Bone and Joint Institute one-plus years ago. The $150 million facility includes outpatient services. Saint Francis Medical Director Steve Schutzer, MD, said the hospital's ASC plans do not correlate to Hartford Hospital opening its center. Dr. Schutzer said the plans are a result of a shift in the market.
