Proposed Virginia Surgery Center Denied CON

Centra Ambulatory Surgery has been denied a certificate of public need to build two outpatient ORs in Danville, Vir., according to a report by the Danville Register & Bee.

Lynchburg, Va.-based Centra has sought to build a two-operating room surgery center, along with diagnostic imaging and a 24-hour emergency department, but has faced many challenges to the project, with the denial of the COPN by State Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Remley the latest obstacle.

Reasons for the denial included the projects failure to fit with the State Medical Facilities Plan, which projects a surplus of ORs in the future, and potential harm to the financial stability of Danville Regional hospital, according to the report.

Centra has 30 days to appeal Dr. Remley's ruling.
