Health Management Associates has reported a jump in its outpatient business, including knee and spinal implant surgeries that do not require an overnight hospital stay, according to a Naples Daily News report.
The company saw a 4.2 percent drop in hospital admissions in the first quarter of the year, as well as fewer uninsured patients checking into hospitals across the country. HMA operates 71 hospitals in non-urban communities through the United States.
In a conference call with analysts Tuesday, Gary D. Newsome, HMA's president and CEO, said he expected the jump in outpatient activity to eventually lead to more hospital admissions when patients who haven't stayed overnight need more critical care. Surgeries at HMA's same hospitals rose 3.8 percent in the first quarter, with orthopedic procedures making up much of the outpatient business.
Spinal implants increased 10 percent in the first quarter compared to a year ago, according to the report.
