BJC HealthCare, SSM Health Care Officials Question Zoning for Missouri Surgery Center

Chesterfield, Mo., has approved a zoning amendment to allow George Paletta, Jr., MD, to open a surgical center in the valley, according to a St. Louis Today report.

The legislation would allow some surgical patients to stay oversight up to 72 hours, raising concerns among some BJC HealthCare and SSM Health Care officials who question whether the surgery center should be licensed as a hospital. Greg Bratcher, policy analysis director for BJC HealthCare, said he was concerned about the safety and appropriateness of the use of the site and traffic.

David Durbin, director of research and regulatory affairs for SSM Health Care, told the council he had concerns about patient safety and care. "While the city's primarily concerned in this case with land use, this plan sounds like a hospital, and the city should consider the ramifications," he said.

Dr. Paletta is the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team head physician and managing partner of Regeneration Orthopedics.
