Although a number of physician-owned hospitals have been sold or shut down since the ACA imposed a moratorium on them in 2010, a few independent ones have managed to keep growing.
Three to know:
Oklahoma City-based McBride Orthopedic Hospital opened an outpatient surgery center in early June.
Tulsa (Okla.) ER and Hospital, a physician-owned microhospital, opened July 29. Tulsa ER and Hospital is a privately owned hospital and will not accept Medicare or Medicaid.
The physician-owned Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital in Springfield celebrated its 10th anniversary in early July. Opened as Ohio Valley Medical Center in 2009, the hospital started with 10 employees and has grown to employ over 300 people. Hospital President Steve Eisentrager said the hospital hopes to hire 20 to 25 employees every year and continue adding services.
