3 North Carolina projects vie for CON approval — 2 include surgery centers

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is considering three certificate-of-need applications to address a shortage of six operating rooms, local ABC affiliate WWAY reports.

What you should know:

1. Wilmington, N.C.-based New Hanover Regional Medical Center is involved with two proposals. In one, the hospital would add four operating rooms to its main campus for $8.4 million. In the other, the hospital would partner with Atlantic SurgiCenter in Wilmington to open two ORs at Atlantic's facility.

2. Wilmington Eye Surgery Center and Wilmington-based WESCP submitted a proposal to develop a new two-room, $9.8 million ASC that could open in July 2021.

3. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will hold a public hearing on the proposals Aug. 14.
