Fourteen hospitals and health systems opened or announced plans for ASCs in May.
Here are the updates:
1. Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health broke ground on an outpatient surgery center May 1. The health system expects to complete the center by August 2019.
2. The Surgery Center at Shrewsbury (Mass.) opened May 24. The center is a joint venture between Worcester-based UMass Memorial Health Care, Brockton, Mass.-based Shields Healthcare Group and Auburn, Mass.-based Reliant Medical Group.
3. A judge ruled in favor of Annapolis, Md.-based Anne Arundel Medical Center's bid to develop a cardiac surgery center.
4. Boulder (Colo.) Community Health is building a 30,000-square-foot medical office building next to its Community Medical Center in Lafayette, Colo. The health system could break ground on the office space by the end of this year, contingent on approval from the city of Lafayette.
5. Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health sought approval for a 15,500-square-foot ASC with two operating rooms, a gastroenterology endoscopy room and a procedure room in Kernsersville, N.C., for $12.7 million.
6. Regent Surgical Health partnered with 14 physicians to open a joint venture surgery center, Oregon Surgical Institute in Beaverton. The new facility is 14,000 square feet and designed as a center of excellence for orthopedics, total joint replacements and spine surgery. The center also takes pain management cases.
7. Port Jefferson (N.Y.) Surgery Center held its grand opening ceremony May 12 after its initial opening in January. The center was a joint venture between 19 community surgeons, Port Jefferson-based Mather Hospital and Lakewood, Colo.-based Pinnacle III.
8. NueHealth partnered with Rothman Institute, Jefferson Health and 14 multispecialty physicians to acquire the Plymouth Meeting, Pa.-based Blue Bell Surgery Center. Rothman Institute and Jefferson Health are based in Philadelphia. NueHealth is based in Leawood, Kansas.
9. Willmar, Minn.-based Carris Health opened its $11 million outpatient surgery center in Willmar.
10. Indian River Medical Center is readying to open the Scully Endoscopy Center. Both facilities are located in Vero Beach, Fla. The center will open in 2018.
11. Dallas-based Children's Health opened Specialty Center 2, which includes the Live Oak Surgery Center, also in Plano.
12. Bozeman (Mont.) Health and United Surgical Partners International partnered to build a $20 million ASC in West Bozeman. Construction on the new ASC is expected to begin in 2019.
13. Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System filed a plan to invest $50 million in a new medical center next to the Laurel (Md.) Regional Hospital. The new facility, UM Laurel Medical Center, will feature a surgery center, 24/7 emergency care, behavioral health resources and outpatient programs, such as wellness promotion.
14. Murfreesboro, Tenn.-based Saint Thomas Health purchased 2.25 acres of land for $1.19 million to build its new outpatient surgery center.
