Medical Clerk Gets 5 Years in Prison for Using Stolen Patient Information to Buy Prescription Drugs

A medical office billing clerk who stole patient information and prescription pads in order to acquire narcotic prescription drugs was sentenced to five years in prison by a federal court judge on Thursday, according to a Seattle Times report.

Alyce Burrell, 28, of Seattle, and her live-in companion, Horace Mitchell III, 26, both pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to acquire controlled substances by fraud and distribute controlled substances.

The two defendants allegedly forged the names of three physicians on prescription forms and charged the drugs to the health insurance held by those whose identities Ms. Burrell stole. Those identities include 60 patients whose records Ms. Burrell stole while she worked as a billing technician at Pacific Retina Specialists in Seattle in fall 2010.

The two defendants passed nearly 100 prescriptions using the stolen identities, according to the report.
