How 2 investments help a Utah ASC 'maintain very healthy margins' — 4 things to know

St. George (Utah) Surgical Center invested in two new pieces of equipment designed to enhance knee and hip arthroplasty procedures, according to Maria Todd, PhD, the ASC's director of business development.

Four things to know:

1. The ASC most recently invested in a Navio Robotics-assisted Surgical System for knee replacements. The center completed its first surgery using the system on Oct. 18.

2. If a payer agrees to pay cash in full on the day of service and assures payment in conjunction with preauthorization, SGSC surgeons can perform a knee replacement using Navio for as low as $14,990, according to Dr. Todd.

3. SGSC also invested in the Hana Table for total hip replacement using the anterior approach. The Hana Table was an $80,000 investment, Dr. Todd said.

4. If a payer agrees to pay cash in full on the day of service and assures payment in conjunction with preauthorization, SGSC could offer anterior hip replacement using the Hana Table for $17,985. That cost would cover the surgeon, anesthesia, facility and implant fees, as well as a first overnight stay, if necessary.

"The hospital cannot compete without losing lots of money, while at those prices, we maintain very healthy margins," Dr. Todd said.
