Doctors Question the Value of Robot-Assisted Surgery

Many physicians say robotic assistance is the future of surgery, but the extra cost might not be worth it for some standard procedures, according to a Family Practice News report.

One such procedure is routine hysterectomies. In a study last year, University of Louisville professor Resad Pasic, MD, found a robotic-assisted hysterectomy cost $2,600 more per operation without improving patient outcome. The number of robotic-assisted hysterectomies performed almost doubled from 69,000 in 2009 to 110,000 in 2010.
