Pulmonary disease has the highest percentage of physicians over 55 years and close to retirement, according to the 2014 Physician Specialty Data Book.
The report was prepared by the Center for Workforce Studies at the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Here are the top 10 specialties with the highest percentage of physicians over the age of 55 years:
- Pulmonary Disease — 78.9 percent
- Preventive Medicine — 66.6 percent
- Anatomic/Clinical Pathology — 60.7 percent
- Psychiatry — 58.7 percent
- Cardiovascular Disease — 55.3 percent
- Thoracic Surgery — 54.8 percent
- Orthopedic Surgery — 52.3 percent
- Allergy & Immunology — 50.8 percent
- Neurology — 50.5 percent
- Plastic Surgery — 49.3 percent
