New research from the University of Chicago is working to create an accurate picture of physician earnings.
University of Chicago health economist Joshua Gottlieb, PhD, worked with a research team to create a dataset that links administrative information on physicians to tax records from 2005 to 2017.

Here are three notes on physician earnings based on region:
1. Physician incomes are the highest in parts of the Great Plains rather than on the coasts.
2. Smaller markets tend to attract lower-earning physicians but boost their earnings.
3. Seventy-percent of the difference in physicians' income across areas is based on the local market.
