The healthcare disruptors this physician is uneasy about

There are many exciting changes occurring in healthcare, but not all are well received.

Bhagwan Satiani, MD, professor of surgery emeritus in the department of surgery at the Ohio State University in Columbus, connected with Becker's to discuss the healthcare disruptors he is nervous about.

Note: This response has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Dr. Bhagwan Satiani: Not in their order of importance, [the healthcare disruptors I am nervous about] are mergers of megacorporations (CVS, Walmart, Amazon, UnitedHealth or Optum) with physicians and insurers; private equity continuing to impact the marketplace; rapid adaptation of artificial intelligence leading to more self-diagnosis and self-care with its policy, payment and legal headaches; probably endemic COVID; and continued shortages of clinical workers.
