Parents of children undergoing surgery tend to choose the cheapest of several treatment options, according to research published in the Annals of Surgery.
For procedures with varying methods and similar outcomes, parents were 1.8 times more likely to choose the cheapest option when given price quotes. About one-third of parents said the quotes had been the primary motivator in their decision, and 90 percent said they liked having a choice in treatment for their children.
The results of the study support the idea that price transparency has the potential to substantially lower the cost of healthcare, according to a report from The New York Times.
