Minnesota physician sentenced to prison for tax evasion

Joseph Meyer, MD, a former family medicine physician in Roseau, Minn., was sentenced to four months in federal prison, six months of home confinement and two years supervised release, and he will be required to pay full restitution for a tax-evasion scheme that lasted almost two decades.

According to the plea agreement, from at least 2000 to 2018, Dr. Meyer, 62, earned significant taxable income as a licensed physician as well as income from his ownership of rental properties and repeatedly challenged his tax obligations in court, concealed his taxable income, and sued his rental tenants for complying with legitimate IRS charges, according to a Nov. 6 news release from the Justice Department. His evasion resulted in a total tax loss of $484,164.

Dr. Meyer pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion on June 29, 2022.
