A Florida man was convicted in a scheme to defraud Medicare of more than $67 million by tricking physicians into authorizing unnecessary genetic tests.
Jose Goyos managed a call center that could target Medicare beneficiaries and their physicians, according to an Oct. 10 news release from the Justice Department. He managed the division that contacted the primary care physician and tricked the providers to order the tests based on fake medical paperwork.
Mr. Goyos and his co-conspirators then used the physicians' authorizations to submit claims to Medicare. The labs, where the tests were sent, had no equipment nor personnel and did not conduct a single test.
Between June 2020 and July 2021, Mr. Coyos submitted more than $67 million claims and Medicare paid more than $53 million.
