Late Pennsylvania physician's estate to pay $625k to settle improper billing claims — 4 insights

The estate of deceased Scranton, Pa.-based pain physician Leroy Pelicci, MD, is paying the federal government $625,000 to settle False Claims Act allegations, Business Insurance reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Dr. Pelicci owned and operated Pelicci Pain Relief Center in Scranton. The U.S. Attorney's office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania alleged Dr. Pelicci submitted several improper claims after treating U.S. Postal Service employees.

2. Dr. Pelicci submitted claims to the Federal Employees Compensation Act and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, which he upcoded to receive a higher reimbursement amount than permitted between 2003 and 2014.

3. The settlement covers the full cost of the claims and the investigation.

4. Dr. Pelicci operated his practice until March 2014.
