Former South Carolina physician gets 5 years for illegal drug distribution

Former Columbia, S.C.-based family medicine physician James Williams, MD, has been sentenced to federal prison for unlawfully prescribing pills.

Between January 2015 and November 2019, Dr. Williams prescribed two patients more than 100,000 pills of oxycodone, hydrocodone, dextroamphetamine and alprazolam, according to an Aug. 21 news release from the Justice Department.

He pleaded guilty in March to prescribing the pills to two patients who pleaded guilty to drug and firearm offenses and admitted they were selling most of the pills they were prescribed.

Dr. Williams, whose license has been revoked, was sentenced to five years in federal prison with a three-year term of court-ordered supervision, the release said.
