Finding the ideal balance: 5 key ASC staffing tips

Outpatient Opthalmic Surgery Society's the Ophthalmic ASC magazine outlined five tips on how to efficiently staff an ASC.

Here are the insights they shared:

1. Employing both per diem and full-time employees ensures an ASC will be able to adjust to the changing daily demands of operating rooms. Hiring qualified staff who are willing to work part-time or on an as-needed basis can present a challenge, but the added flexibility can help an ASC run smoother.

2. Hiring nurses without OR experience can allow ASCs to train them to fit their specific needs.

3. Both per-diem and part-time employees must undergo the same amount of training required by accrediting organizations. Training can take longer and can be more interrupted for per diem and part-time employees

4. Because up to 20 percent of an ASC's revenue can go toward staffing, finding the right mix of full-time, part-time and per-diem employees to fit the center's surgical schedule can help the center run more efficiently.

5. Researching staffing benchmarks can help an ASC assess what they're doing well and what needs to change.
