Brookside Surgery Center, located in Battle Creek, Mich., is the first ambulatory surgery center in Michigan to perform total knee replacement surgery.
Joseph Burkhardt, DO, orthopedic surgeon and physician partner, performed the first total knee replacement procedure at Brookside Surgery Center in September 2014 and has more cases scheduled through the remainder of the year. Total knee replacements mark the first phase of the launch of Brookside Surgery Center's total joint replacement program that will soon include total hip and total shoulder replacements. Additional Brookside Surgery Center orthopedic surgeon partners who will participate are Daniel Garcia, MD, and Mark Russell, DO.
In the past 12 months, over 73 unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement surgeries have been performed at Brookside Surgery Center. While total knee replacement surgery has traditionally been an inpatient procedure, technological advances in equipment, training, anesthesia, and pain management have made it safe to perform on select patients in an ASC setting.
"It's a game changer for Battle Creek area patients to be able to have their total knee replacement surgery performed in an ASC setting," said Dr. Burkhardt. "Some of the most tangible reasons include a comfortable and private setting, less out-of-pocket cost, lower infection rates, and the ability to return home within one day," added Dr. Burkhardt.
"Our team is excited to offer this innovation and looks forward to expanding our program to include total hips and shoulders," added Burkhardt.
Brookside Surgery Center is a Meridian Surgical Partners facility and a Bronson Battle Creek partner.
