75% of healthcare industry suffered malware infections in past year — 8 key report findings

SecurityScorecard, a security rating and risk monitoring platform, issued its "2016 Healthcare Industry Cybersecurity Report," revealing striking cybersecurity weaknesses among 700 healthcare organizations.

Here are eight report insights:

1. Out of all industries, healthcare checks in with the fifth highest count of ransomware.

2. The report ranks the healthcare industry 15th out of 18 industries on a social engineering scale, which indicates a significant security awareness issue among healthcare professionals.

3. More than 75 percent of the healthcare industry has experienced malware infections in the last year.

4. Further, 96 percent of ransomware hit medical treatment centers.

5. Healthcare manufacturing clocks in at a 90 percent malware infection rate.

6. On the Patching Cadence grading report, which measures an organization's ability to implement security software patches quickly, 63 percent of the nation's 27 largest hospitals received a "C" grade or lower.

7. More than half of the healthcare industry earned a network security score of "C" or lower.

8. Since August 2015, the healthcare industry has experienced 22 major public breaches.
