5 Specialties With Lowest Number of Active Physicians

Vascular surgery had the lowest numbers of active physicians in 2010, according to the 2012 Physician Specialty Data Book, prepared by the Center for Workforce Studies at the Association of American Medical Colleges.
The primary data sources for this report include the American Medical Association 2011 Physician Masterfile, population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau and the AAMC/AMA National Graduate Medical Education Census.

Here are five specialties with the fewest active physicians, in 2010:

•    Allergy and immunology — 4,325
•    Neonatal-perinatal medicine — 4,404
•    Geriatric medicine — 4,278
•    Internal medicine/pediatrics — 3,844
•    Vascular surgery — 2,853
