2 physician owners to pay $1M to settle false claims allegations

Two Newark, N.J.-based physicians and their medical practice will pay $1 million to resolve False Claims Act allegations, the U.S. Justice Department said April 28.

From Jan. 1, 2013, to Aug. 31, 2022, Fadi El-Atat, MD, and Sarah Abdul-Sater, MD, knowingly sought reimbursements for medically unnecessary balance tests, pulmonary function tests, allergy tests, autonomic nervous tests and cardiology ultrasound tests.

The allegations were originally made by whistleblower Jennifer Jean, who will receive roughly $180,000 from the settlement.
