Here are 10 surgery centers recently planned, developed or opened by hospitals and health systems.
1. South Carolina's Waccamaw Community Hospital. Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, S.C., is responding to a growth in services with a new surgery, to be completed by spring 2013. The surgery center expansion will add four operating rooms, six recovery beds and additional procedural space for the hospital. According to the report, the hospital had more than 3,800 surgery cases during the fiscal year that ended in September 2012.
2. New York's Eastern Long Island Hospital. Representatives of Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, N.Y., will unveil a new outpatient surgery pavilion on Monday. The new facility includes nine pre-op and post-op surgical bays and an extended nurses station with a new reception and waiting area. With over 4,500 square feet of space, the facility is one of the largest expansions in the hospital's 107-year history.
3. Arkansas' Drew Memorial Hospital. Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello, Ark., is planning a new surgery center to replace the hospital's operating suite, which dates back to the 1970s. The hospital's board of directors met two weeks ago to discuss preliminary plans for the center, as well as the possibility of constructing a geriatric-psychiatric unit as a new income producer for the hospital.
4. California's Marian Regional Medical Center. Dignity Health has opened the Weight Loss Surgery Institute of the Central Coast in Santa Maria, Calif. Screenings, surgeries and follow-up will take place at the surgery center on Marian Regional Medical Center's campus. The surgery center is headed up by David Maccabee, MD, who completed his residency at the University of Washington in Seattle and the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.
5. Alaska's Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. Providence Alaska is seeking state approval to construct an outpatient surgery center, most likely in one of the medical buildings surrounding Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Wasilla, Alaska, according to a Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman report. Bruce Lamoureux, CEO for the Providence Alaska region, said the system will submit a certificate of need application, which is required in Alaska for projects over $1.35 million. If the project clears the CON process, construction could begin in 2013 or early 2014.
6. Ohio's Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center hopes to establish a 10,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center in Ohio. The VA is seeking approval from the Cleveland City Planning Commission for the one-story building, which would handle minimally invasive procedures including cataracts, biopsies and plastic surgery.
7. New Jersey's Malo Health. The Malo Health Clinic and Wellness Center in Rutherford, N.J., is set to open the doors to its new four-OR ambulatory surgery center, according to a release. The center will be known as the Malo Clinic Center for Ambulatory Surgery (Malo ASC). Malo Clinics are currently present in four different continents. The Malo ASC will serve as a model for patient care and bring the Clinic's "pioneering standards" to New Jersey, according to the release.
8. Wisconsin's Waukesha Memorial Hospital. The ProHealth Care Foundation has announced plans for the Edwin A. Gallun Jr. Family Surgical Center, which will add 16 surgery suites to Waukesha Memorial Hospital. Edwin and Elfie Gallun, the owners of Metalcraft in Mayville, Wis., have pledged to give $2 million for the renovation.
9. Michigan's Metro Health. Metro Health in Grand Rapids, Mich., has announced plans to expand its downtown surgery center by adding a fourth operating room. The outpatient surgery center will be renamed the Metro Health OAM Surgery Center in collaboration with Orthopedic Associates of Michigan. The fourth operating suite will be added in January 2013.

The facility is scheduled to open in August 2013 and will be located next to the hospital's same-day surgery wing.
