The Utah Department of Health has reported 17 of these provider-preventable conditions, most of which were infections. Names of reporting hospitals are kept confidential, and while reporting these infections or injuries is a federal health care requirement, the actual reporting is spotty.
Rod Betit, executive director of the Utah Hospital Association, attributed the problem to unclear requirements. "We need to have a baseline before releasing information showing what progress is being made, or not being made, at various facilities," he said.
Though reporting is mandatory, little penalties exist for those caught shirking requirements.
