More than 600,000 veterans could be without insurance in 2019 if a 19 state holdout is not resolved, NBC News reports.
Here's what you should know.
1. Approximately 604,000 veterans are in the Medicaid gap, according to an Urban Institute report. The veterans are not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid, but make too much for federal subsidies.
They also aren't all qualified for coverage through the Department of Veteran Affairs.
2. If the Medicaid program is not expanded, those 604,000 would be without coverage in the coming year. The number is down from 2014, however, which saw more than 700,000 go uncovered.
3. Since 2014, 32 states expanded their Medicaid coverage through the ACA.
4. Kathy Hempstead, of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said many of the possibly uninsured veterans would be eligible for coverage of the state's expanded Medicaid.
