Seniors unaware of Medicare, Medicaid's ins-and-outs — 6 thoughts

In Kaiser Family Foundation's "Medicare and Medicaid at 50" report, most American seniors (60 percent) asserted Medicare and Medicaid (50 percent) were working well. However, a more in-depth look at the survey's results show Americans may not fully understand the programs, according to The Motley Fool.

Here are six thoughts:

1. Only 42 percent of respondents in states with expanded Medicaid were aware of the expansion.

2. On the other hand, 46 percent of respondents living in non-expansion states were aware their states did not expand the program.

3. Only 30 percent of seniors knew high-income seniors paid a higher Part B premium than seniors who earn less than $85,000 each year or joint-fillers with combined incomes below $170,000.

4. Forty-six percent of seniors believed high-income seniors did not pay any extra and 24 percent reported they did not know or refused to answer.

5. To educate Americans, CMS could work with local governments and state governments on core health programs.

6. If Americans have a more extensive knowledge of the programs, enrollment in the programs will likely increase.
