A new report from Accenture shows many physicians are being driven out of private practice in part by government meaningful use requirements for electronic health records, according to Healthcare IT News.
The report found 61 percent of physicians surveyed will seek employment within larger practices or health systems rather than opening a private practice, with 87 percent saying the high cost of doing business is keeping them from operating independently.
Others cited the prevalence of managed care as a growing challenge.
Physicians in private practice have dropped from 57 percent in 2000 to 39 percent in 2012. Accenture predicts an additional 3 percent drop by the end of 2013.
