Opinion: US Providers Should Embrace ICD-10 Benefits, Prepare as Much as Possible

When it comes to ICD-10, healthcare providers should learn from the troubled HealthCare.gov rollout that that it is never too early to prepare for change, according to a report in The National Law Review.

Though the U.S. prepares to implement the new code set in October, less than nine months from now, it is still greatly behind other countries in coding and claim documentation. For instance, the United Kingdom adopted ICD-10 in 1995.

Providers and facilities can look on the bright side as they are training and preparing. ICD-9 is greatly limited in the number of new codes that can be created, and it does not reflect current medical knowledge. ICD-10 specificity and detail will help providers track outcomes, patient improvement and costs.
